Summary
The Brightmoor Runway is a small scale urban intervention in Detroit that transforms a section of sidewalk into an active, playful environment for children and the wider community. Located where many schoolchildren wait daily for buses, the project reimagines this routine space as an interactive running and exercise track, supported by a motion activated solar pathway and a modified radar speed display that allows users to measure their movement in real time.
Developed through a collaborative process involving a series of workshops and meetings with community partners—including K 12 students, teachers, local organizations, and neighborhood groups—the design reflects local needs and aspirations.
By integrating play, movement, and real time feedback, the intervention encourages physical activity and social interaction during everyday routines. Brightmoor Runway demonstrates how low cost, community driven design can activate public space, supporting healthier behaviours and more engaging mobility environments.
