Summary
CicloExpresso is a Portuguese initiative led by Bicicultura, designed to enable children to travel to school by bicycle in organised groups, following the model of a “bike bus.” Each CicloExpresso line operates with fixed routes, schedules, and meeting points, with children accompanied by trained adult volunteers (maquinistas). First launched in Lisbon in 2015 by parents seeking safer and more autonomous school journeys, the initiative has since expanded to several cities across Portugal through partnerships with municipalities, schools, and parent associations. By combining safety, routine, and enjoyment, CicloExpresso promotes active and sustainable mobility, children’s autonomy, physical health, and social interaction, while reducing car traffic around schools. The project demonstrates how community‑led organisation and local policy-making, can make cycling a sustainable, trusted, and attractive everyday option for school travel.
